Kemka Humphrey Ogbonda holds a BSc (Botany) and MSc (Microbiology) degrees of the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. He also holds a PhD (Microbiology) and a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) of the University of Port Harcourt.

Kemka H. Ogbonda is a Professor of Environmental and Applied Microbiology at the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Port Harcourt, where he has held several positions including:

  • Director, School of Basic Studies;
  • Head, St. John’s Diobu Campus;
  • Dean, Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences

Presently he is Director, Directorate of Research and Development of the University. Professor Ogbonda is married with children.

Methodology included isolating and identifying the organism and exposing it to various environmental factor (pH, temperature, various nutrients) regimes to determine the optimal conditions for maximum biomass and protein production.  This was necessary for maximizing the yield of the organism, which is edible and known to have a lot of nutritional and medicinal values.

24. CONTRIBUTIONS TO KNOWLEDGE

  • My PhD Research at the University of Port Harcourt established the growth parameters for maximizing the production yield of the edible green alga, Spirulinaplatensis.
  • My research on endogenous ethanol production demonstrated the presence and/or occurrence of endogenous ethanol in the larva of oil palm weevil, which explained the age-long mystery of getting intoxicated (autobrewery syndrome) after eating a few of the larva. This work attracted the attention of scientists world-wide to the extent that I was invited to take part in a genomics research on the organism by the Joint Centre for Genomics Research (JCGR), King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST), Saudi Arabia and Chinese Academy of Science (CAS), China.
