Philosophy, Aims and Objectives of the Degree Programme

Home Science/Economics as a field of study is concerned with the ways in which the quality and content of family life can be enhanced maximally through optimum utilization of its human and material resources. It is an applied field of study that brings together knowledge and skills from different disciplines within the pure and applied arts and sciences to solve the most pressing problems that challenge families presently, as well as those that are possibly going to emerge in the future. The field has developed tremendously within the last few decades in both its outreach and its depth of penetration in order to meet the dynamic nature of the problems and challenges of individuals, families and societies

The Objectives of the programme are to:

  1. train students in the development, use and management of material resources required to foster various aspects of individual, family and national development.
  2. develop the latent potentials of students and enable them to take up leadership positions and become professionals in public and private establishments related to their chosen areas of study.
  • equip students with entrepreneurial skills needed to create small to medium scale businesses in the major areas of the curriculum.

The options of the degree programme are:

Nutrition and Dietetics Clothing and Textiles Home and Furnishing Catering and Hotel Management.

Admission Requirements

UTME Subjects: Chemistry, Biology or Agricultural Science and one (1) other subject
Direct Entry Requirements i) NCE merit in Home Economics
(ii) A level passes in two (2) of Chemistry or any Biology, Botany and Agricultural Science.
(iii) ND/HND credit in Home Economics or Food Science or Hotel and Catering Management or any other
related programme..
UTME Requirements: Five (5) O level NTC/NBC credit passes or TC II merit including English Language, Mathematics, Home Economics, Biology and Chemistry.
