Introductory note on the Department

The Department of Integrated Science was established as an autonomous and full pledged department in 1985/1986 session.  Prior to this period, the Department had existed as a unit of Primary Education at the St. John’s campus of the school and trains NCE teachers in the following combinations:

  1. Integrated Science/Chemistry
  • Integrated Science/Mathematics
  • Integrated Science/Biology
  • Integrated Science/Physics
  • Integrated Science/Geography
  • Integrated Science/Primary Education
  • Integrated Science/Computer Education

The Department started a B.Ed programme in 1992 and turned out the first graduates in 1995.

The mission of the Department is to offer a learning environment in which students can critically investigate, discover, conserve, and transmit information, values and skills that will aid in the survival of current and future generations while also improving the quality of life for all.  In addition, to help student’s gain an awareness and respect for the complex cultural and physical environment in which they live, as well as to fulfill their full intellectual potential, human and physical development.

The Department is governed by the university’s general aims of assisting in the solution to the world’s most pressing problems in the twenty-first century. Specifically, the Department’s vision is guided, among other things by:

  1. Making strides toward being a global leader in science and science education
  1. Providing opportunities for our students to pursue their academic and career goals in a varied, friendly and inclusive environment.
  1. Developing novel links between education, science, technology,  and  the

environment /society.

  1. Increasing support for a vibrant department focused on teaching, mentoring, research and cooperation.
  • Serving our community via innovative programs that enhance their lifetime link with the society that benefits from our joint contribution to the globe.

Philosophy

The philosophy of the Department of Integrated Science under the Integrated Science Education programme includes among others: To train Professional Integrated Science teachers and teacher trainers at the Bachelor’s level; adequately motivated and equipped with the relevant knowledge, skills, methods and attitudes to cultivate inquiring, knowing and rational minds for the conduct of good life in order to:

  • Produce professional Integrated Science Teachers for National Development.
  • Prepare Teachers who will service studies in Science and Technology and Technological Development.
  • Produce graduates who will provide knowledge and understanding of the complexity of the Physical world; the forms and the conducts of life at the Basic Education level.

Aims/Objectives of Integrated Science

The objectives of the programme include;

  • Enabling students gain the concept of the fundamental unity of science.
  • Instilling in the students commonality of approach to problems of a scientific nature.
  • Increasing students understanding of the role and functions of science in everyday life and the world in which they live.
  • Making students well informed and scientifically literate.
  • Enabling students acquire and demonstrate the intellectual competence and professional skills necessary to the teaching of Integrated Science in Primary and Junior Secondary Schools, as an inquiry based subject in conformity with the national curriculum.
  • Developing in students, the ability to impart and encourage their spirit of inquiry into living and non-living components of the environment, energy changes in the environment, and environmental issues / problems.
  • Developing the ability and motivation in students to work and think in an independent manner.
  • Enabling students carry out scientific investigations emphasizing cooperation, development of appropriate scientific processes and skills and improving their writing and oral communication skills.

Admission Requirements:

a). UTME

Candidate must possess five credit passes at SSCE (or its equivalent) including English,  Mathematics and

  • any one of  Chemistry,  Biology, Physics and
  • any two of Chemistry,  Biology, Physics, Agricultural Science, Health Science, Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, Geography, Further Mathematics, and Computer studies   (excluding anyone already possess in (i) above).

b). Direct Entry

Candidate must possess:

  • GCE “A” level passes in  at least any two of Chemistry,  Biology, Physics  or
  • Merit passes in NCE  Integrated Science (Double major or NCE  Integrated Science combined with other science subject) or
  •  OND or its equivalent at not less than merit pass are required for Direct Entry admission provided the candidate also satisfy the UTME admission requirements.
