The department of chemistry started at the inception of the institution on August 2, 1971 with three (3) academic staff and one (1) laboratory assistant to prepare students for the Nigeria certificate in education (NCE) programme. The first batch of NCE students was sixteen (16) in numbers and graduated in 1974. The department started the B.ED programmme in 1981 with seven (7) students who did the post NCE course. These graduated in 1983.

Presently, the department has two well-equipped laboratories and is blessed with competent lectures. It also has very kind and amiable administrative and technical staff that are always willing to assist students in their practical classes and tech them on how to make use of laboratory equipment.

Department of chemistry has at present over two hundred and fifty students. The recent boost in the number of admitted students into the department could be attributed to the granting of autonomy and license to the institution to operate as a university. Over the years, our students are known to be hard-working and disciplined and do not indulge in examination malpractice.

PHILOSOPHY

This curriculum is designed to equip teachers with the relevant knowledge, skills, altitudes and methods to enable them teach chemistry at the secondary school level. The chemistry department of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education is established to train teachers and teacher trainers at the b.sc (ED) level

OBJECTIVES

The objectives of the department are to:

  • To train professional chemistry teachers for competency on their job capable of developing inquiry and creative minds in teaching at different levels of secondary educational institution.
  • To produce teachers who are motivated, diligent, conscientious and efficient in the use of appropriate teaching strategies at all levels of post-primary and post-secondary educational institution.
  • To train teachers who will be well-equipped to proceed for higher degrees either in Chemistry or Chemistry Education.
