DEPARTMENT OF ADULT EDUCATION
ACADEMIC CURRICULUM
The academic curriculum of the programme is based on the Benchmark and Minimum Academic Standards (BMAS) as stipulated by the National Universities Commission (NUC).
VISION OF THE PROGRAMME
The vision of the programme is to promote academic excellence in adult Education practice and development through committed and practical research. It is also to enable our graduate’s fill the gap in manpower need in Adult Education and become independent, self-reliant, innovative, as well as productive and useful to the society and be able to produce graduates that will become facilitators through Adult Education practices.
MISSION OF PROGRAMME
The mission is to make our Adult Education programme responsive to current and future needs of our graduates, the government and the society as well as supporting the socioeconomic development of the country. Besides, the programmes mission include; producing world-class Adult Education practitioners and professionals using our unique and distinct academic specialty
PHILOSOPHY OF THE PROGRAMME
The philosophy of the programme will be designed in such a way as to produce highly qualified personnel capable of effective planning, implementing and managing, of Adult Education, Mass Education, Community Development, Environmental Adult Education as well as continuing Education programmes, for the purpose of converting the Rivers State community and the nation at large into a learning society.
OBJECTIVES
The objective of the programme will be to produce adult education practitioners, who are competent and have sound academic and professional training and are therefore capable of giving appropriate guidance in the implementation of the National Policy on education in line with specific educational needs in Rivers State as follows.
- To provide functional literacy education for adults who never had the advantage of any formal education
- To provide education for those young people who prematurely dropped out of the formal school system
- To provide further education for different categories of completers of the formal education system in order to improve their basic knowledge and skills.
- To provide in-service, on-the-job, vocational and professional training for different categories of workers and professionals in order to improve their skills.
- To give the adult citizens of the country necessary aesthetic, cultural and civic education for public enlightenment.
- To produce adult educators that can provide community based educational programmes and also teach within the formal set-up of the educational system.
HOD Profile
PROFESSOR AUGUSTINE MARTIN ONYEOZU
Prof. A.M Onyeozu was born in Elele Alimini in Emohua Local Government Area, Rivers State, Nigeria on the 3rd of February 1946. He schooled in St. Joseph’s primary school Elele Alimini where he had his first school leaving certificate in 1959. His secondary education was in Kalabari National College Buguma, where he had his West African School Certificate (WAEC) in 1965. He studied in three Universities: University of Ibadan, University of Manchester (UK), and University of Lagos.
EDUCATION
In University of Ibadan, he did a 2 year diploma programme in Adult Education and Community Development, obtaining the diploma in 1975. After that he worked in the ministry of rural development from 1976 -1978. Thereafter, he left for Manchester University where he did a Postgraduate Diploma as well as a Master Degree programme (M.Ed.) in Adult Education and Community Development. He came back to Nigeria in 1980 to continue his job in Rivers State Ministry of Rural Development up to 1981. In same year, he secured a new job in the administrative sector of University of Port Harcourt, as Assistant Registrar and rose to the rank of Principal Assistant Registrar by 1987
He went to University of Lagos where he obtained a Ph.D. in Adult Education and Community Development in 1994. At the completion of the Ph.D Programme, he was converted into academics as lecturer 11 in the Department of Adult and Non-Formal Education, where he rose to the rank of Professor in 2010
POSITION
In the University of Port Harcourt, he held various positions such as Coordinator, Post National Certificate of Education (NCE) Sandwich Proramme; Coordinator, Institute of Education Post Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) Programme; Coordinator, Department of Adult & Non-Formal Education; and later Acting Head of Department for three consecutive tenures. He retired from University of Port Harcourt in 2016 and is now on contract appointment with Ignatius Ajuru University of Education.
PUBLICATIONS
He has published profoundly in the area of Adult Education and Community Development.

Admission Requirements
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
- Entry through UTME 4year B.Ed/B.Sc.Ed. 9Adult Ed. / Teaching Subjects)r
Candidates for the 4 years degree programme in Adult Education are to be admitted through JAMB (UTME) and should have credit passes in relevant subjects, including English Language, and Mathematics. The other 3 relevant subjects for arts student should be chosen from the liberal arts subjects such as: history, Religious Studies, Government, English Literature, Commerce, etc. for science students, the other 3 relevant subjects should be chosen from the science, e.g, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics.
- Direct Entry (3 years B.Ed/B.sc.Ed Adult Education/Teaching Subjects)
Any of the following qualifications will be acceptable.
- At least a pass at credit level in a relevant Diploma programme provided the University English requirement has been satisfied.
- At least 2 passes in relevant subject areas in advanced level, with SSCE/GCE ‘O’LEVEL Credit passes in three other subjects at not more than 2 sittings
- At least in 2 major subjects in relevant areas in the NCE with GCE ‘O’ Level credit or its equivalent in 2 other subjects.
GENERAL ADMISSION REQUIREMENT
Candidate for admission into the B.Ed/Bsc.Ed, Adult Education degree programme with academic teaching subjects in the Arts and sciences must satisfy the University’s minimum entry qualification, which stipulates credit passes including English Language and Mathematics in GCE/SSCE, ‘O’LEVEL, NECO/WAEC (In not more than two sittings.)
