History of the Department
The Rivers State University of Education was established in 2009 following the upgrade of Rivers State College of Education to a university by the National Universities Commission (NUC), The new Faculty of Social Sciences took off with four Departments, namely: Economics, Geography, Political Science and Social Studies Education. The later was wrongly placed in this faculty as it has its place of pride in the Faculty of Education.
With the advent of Prof. Ozo-Mekuri Ndimele as a substantive Vice Chancellor of this great citadel of learning, several new departments were established to award Bachelor of Science (B.Sc), Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) and Bachelor of Technology (B. The pioneer Head of Department was Professor Kingdom Elendu O. Nwaenyi, who doubled as the Head of Department of Sociology as well as that of Social Studies. - Peace and Conflict Studies
The Department maintains its academic autonomy by containing in its curriculum, special courses designed to achieve the specific vision and objective of the Department.
