The Department of Integrated Science was established as an autonomous and full-fledged department in the 1985/1986 session. Prior to this period, the Department had existed as a unit of Primary Education at the St. John’s campus of the school where it trained NCE teachers in the following combinations:
- Integrated Science/Chemistry
- Integrated Science/Mathematics
- Integrated Science/Biology
- Integrated Science/Physics
- Integrated Science/Geography
- Integrated Science/Primary Education
- Integrated Science/Computer Education
The Department started a B.Ed programme in 1992 and turned out the first graduates in 1995.
The mission of the Department is to offer a learning environment in which students can critically investigate, discover, conserve, and transmit information, values and skills that will aid in the survival of current and future generations while also improving the quality of life for all. In addition, to help students gain an awareness and respect for the complex cultural and physical environment in which they live, as well as to fulfill their full intellectual potential, human, and physical development.
The Department is governed by the university’s general aim of assisting in the solution to the world’s most pressing problems in the twenty-first century. Specifically, the Department’s vision is guided, among other things by:
