Introductory Note on the Faculty
The Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences started at the inception of the College of Education in January 1971 with the 3-year Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) programmes in Biology, Chemistry, Human Kinetics, Mathematics and Physics. The Department of Integrated Science had existed as a unit of Primary Education at the St. John’s Campus of the College but was transferred to the Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences during the 1985/1986 session as full-fledged Department. During the 2003/2004 session Computer Science was established in the Faculty bringing up the number to seven (7) Departments. With the upgrading of the institution to a degree awarding status in 1980, the Faculty began the Bachelor of Education (B.ED.) degree programmes in various Departments in May 28, 1982 as the College matriculated the pioneer students in affiliation with the University of Ibadan. In 2009 when the University became autonomous, the name was changed from Rivers State College of Education, first to Rivers State University of Education and later to Ignatius Ajuru University of Education. The change brought about structural changes. In consonance with the new status, the Faculty also metamorphosed from Faculty of Science to Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences to accommodate new programmes.
Philosophy
The philosophy of the faculty is to produce graduates that are motivated and knowledgeable and sound in their chosen areas of science. We encourage our students to be confident and not to compromise integrity but provide change for a global society.
Motto
The motto of the University, which states Science and professionalism is a call on the members of the University community, to progressively contribute their best to the growth and development, first of their immediate community, Rivers State and Nigeria at large.
Vision
The Faculty adopts the vision of the University: – to engender, sustain and refine through all foreseeable educational futures for humanity, or dependable supply of suitably prepared scientific manpower stock. Accordingly, the Faculty trains its students in the sciences and also encourages inter-disciplinary approach by introducing compulsory Faculty foundation courses to cover each of the academic disciplines in the Faculty.
Mission
The mission of the Faculty is to create, preserve and communicate scientific knowledge and techniques of each academic discipline to improve teaching, learning and research for the benefit of the society.
