CURRICULUM STUDIES AND INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNOLOGY

The department of curriculum studies and instructional technology at the undergraduate level, is a servicing department presently. By implication, it does not admit undergraduate students direct into the department but offers courses that all the students in the university, training to attain a Bachelor’s Degree in Education must do.

Most of the courses are compulsory. The department runs courses in Post graduate Diploma in education; Master in Education; and Doctor of Philosophy. Options available in the department are:

  1. Curriculum Studies
  2. Educational Technology
  3. Science Education
  4. Mathematics Education
  5. Language Education
  6. Adult Education

 PHILOSOPHY

There is an observed need for more efficient curriculum planners and implementers in our educational system. Most educational and training establishments therefore need members of staff capable of planning, developing and executing curriculum packages for the attainment of societal aspirations. Following the country’s need for self-reliance and technological growth, development in the field of Curriculum Studies and Educational Technology becomes most expedient. The Post Graduate programmes in Curriculum Studies and Instructional Technology (CSIT) Department are designed to meet the increasing demand for highly trained specialists in curriculum studies and instructional technology in various subject areas. In addition, several participants in the present undergraduate courses as well as teaching and non-teaching staff of colleges of education, polytechnics and universities’ graduates show interest in furthering their studies in the field of Curriculum Studies and Educational Technology.

AIM/OBJECTIVES

The aim is to train well qualified, competent, highly motivated, conscientious and efficient teachers. By the end of the programme, the students should be able to acquire skills and competence that will enable them to:

  1. plan, develop and implement curriculum packages;
  2. effectively evaluate and review curriculum of different academic levels;
  3. incorporate innovative strategies in classroom transactions;
  4. produce and apply appropriate learning resources for different instructional content;
  5. manipulate different educational media; and
  6. occupy leadership positions as researchers and instructors at different levels of educational institutions and research institute.

HOD’s Profile

DR. MARILYN UWAHUNWO OCHOMA

Dr. Marilyn Uwahunwo Ochoma was born on the 9th of May, 1970 to Mr. Naboth Benson Igwe and Mrs. Charity Igwe (nee Okorji) both of Ahoada town in Ahoada East Local Government Area of Rivers State.
Dr. Marilyn is presently, an Associate Professor of Curriculum and Instruction. She loves to read. She is a great teacher; she inspires her students to attain great height. She is friendly; a practicing Christian; married with children.

EDUCATION

She attended Government Primary School, Ahoada and then proceeded to Government Girls’ Secondary School, kreigani and Community Girls’ Secondary School, Omoku where she obtained the West African School Certificate in 1986. In 1989, she got admission to study English Language/Religion in the then Rivers State College of Education, Rumuolumeni, Port Harcourt, now Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, where she obtained the Nigerian Certificate in Education in 1992. In 1997, she obtained a Bachelor Degree in English Language/Education with a Second Class Upper Division, from Lagos State University, Ojo and thereafter, proceeded to University of Lagos, Akoka where she obtained a Master in Education Degree in English Language/Curriculum Studies in 2002. In the year 2014, she bagged a Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Curriculum Studies and Instruction from the University of Port Harcourt, Choba.
Marilyn was employed by the Rivers State Government in the year 2005, as an Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Curriculum Studies and Instructional Technology. She teaches courses at both the Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels. She has over 17 years teaching experience. She has served the department and institution in some capacity, and still serving. She is presently the Acting Head of Department. She also facilitates for Nigeria Institute of Education (NTI), Kaduna.

PUBLICATIONS

She has to her credit, three textbooks; two chapters in book; and over thirty articles published in reputable journals, both local and international. Her research interest is in Curriculum and Instruction; Language Education; and Adult Education.

ASSOCIATION

She is a member of some professional bodies such as:
National Association for the Advancement of Knowledge (NAFAK); Curriculum Organisation of Nigeria (CON); Nigerian Association for Educational Media and Technology (NAEMT); and World Educators’ Forum. She is a registered member of Teachers’ Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN). She has passion for ‘Teaching how to Teach.

Admission Requirements

ADMISSION REQUIREMENT FOR ANY OF THE PROPOSED MASTERS DEGREE OPTION IN THE DEPARTMENT OF CURRICULUM STUDIES AND INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNOLOGY

ADMISSION 

Admission into the M,Ed programme in Science Education; Mathematics Education; & Adult Education is available to applicants that have earned a first degree (B.Sc. Ed, B.A. Ed. or B.Ed.) with at least a second class honours division of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (IAUE), or from other universities recognised by the Senate of IAUE. Candidates who possess degree outside education may also be considered provided they possess a Post Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) and minimum of two years of experience as classroom teachers.
